The 7-day Machame Route, often called the “Whiskey Route,” is a scenic camping route approaching Kilimanjaro from the south. The itinerary passes through rainforest, moorland, the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Valley, Karanga and Barafu before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m. The normal descent is via the Mweka Route.

Distance: Approximately 10–11 km
Hiking time: 5–7 hours
Starting elevation: ~1,800 m
Camp elevation: ~3,000 m
Habitat: Montane rainforest
Overnight: Machame Camp
After breakfast, you will be transferred from Moshi to Machame Gate. The drive takes approximately 45–60 minutes depending on traffic and the starting location.
At the gate, your guide will complete registration and park-entry procedures while the mountain crew organizes the equipment and supplies.
Once ready, you begin your trek through the lush montane rainforest.
The trail gradually climbs through dense vegetation, with tall trees, ferns, moss and abundant birdlife. Depending on conditions, the lower section can be muddy and slippery.
Your guide will maintain a comfortable pole-pole pace, allowing you to conserve energy from the beginning.
After several hours of hiking, you arrive at Machame Camp, where the porters will have prepared the camp.
Enjoy dinner and settle in for your first night on the mountain.
Overnight: Machame Camp
Meals: Lunch and dinner
Distance: Approximately 5–6 km
Hiking time: 4–6 hours
Altitude: ~3,000 m → ~3,800 m
Habitat: Moorland / heath
Overnight: Shira Camp
After breakfast, leave Machame Camp and continue climbing.
The trail becomes steeper as you leave the rainforest behind and enter the heath and moorland zone. The vegetation becomes shorter and the landscape opens up.
You will climb along rocky ridges toward the Shira Plateau, one of the most spectacular sections of the route.
As the weather permits, you may begin to see the massive Kibo summit rising ahead.
The day's hiking distance is relatively short, but the altitude gain is significant. Therefore, the guide will keep the pace slow and steady.
Arrive at Shira Camp in the afternoon, have lunch and spend time relaxing and acclimatizing.
The open landscape around Shira provides excellent views, especially around sunset.
Overnight: Shira Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Distance: Approximately 10 km
Hiking time: 6–8 hours
Highest point: ~4,630 m at Lava Tower
Sleeping altitude: ~3,960 m
Habitat: Semi-desert / alpine desert
Overnight: Barranco Camp
This is one of the most important acclimatization days on the Machame Route.
After breakfast, leave Shira and begin heading east toward Kibo.
The landscape becomes increasingly barren as you enter the high-altitude desert zone.
You gradually climb toward Lava Tower, reaching approximately 4,600–4,630 m.
This is deliberately a “climb high, sleep low” day. You gain considerable elevation during the hike and then descend to a lower sleeping altitude at Barranco.
At Lava Tower, you normally stop for lunch and rest before continuing.
From Lava Tower, the trail descends toward the spectacular Barranco Valley.
The descent is important for acclimatization and gives your body time to adjust to the higher altitude.
As you approach Barranco Camp, you will see the impressive Barranco Wall rising above the camp.
Dinner is served at camp, followed by rest.
Overnight: Barranco Camp – approximately 3,960 m
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Distance: Approximately 4–5 km
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
Altitude: ~3,960 m → ~4,000 m
Habitat: Alpine desert
Overnight: Karanga Camp
After breakfast, you begin the famous climb up the Barranco Wall.
From the campsite, the wall initially looks intimidating, but the trail follows a non-technical scrambling route. Trekkers use their hands occasionally for balance while the guide assists with route finding.
No technical climbing equipment is normally required.
Once above the Barranco Wall, the trail continues across a series of valleys and ridges toward Karanga.
The day is intentionally short compared with some of the other stages. This gives you additional time to acclimatize and rest before the final push toward Barafu.
You arrive at Karanga Camp in the afternoon.
After lunch, spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing, hydrating and enjoying views of the mountain.
Overnight: Karanga Camp – approximately 4,000 m
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Distance: Approximately 4–5 km
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
Altitude: ~4,000 m → ~4,673 m
Habitat: Alpine desert
Overnight: Barafu Camp
After breakfast, leave Karanga and continue toward Barafu Camp, the main base camp for the summit attempt.
The trail becomes increasingly rocky and barren as you climb higher.
You eventually reach Barafu, situated at approximately 4,673 m.
Barafu means “ice” in Swahili, and the camp is exposed to cold temperatures and strong winds.
After arriving, you will have lunch and receive a briefing from your guide about the summit attempt.
The afternoon is spent preparing your summit equipment:
- Warm layers
- Waterproof jacket
- Gloves
- Hat
- Headlamp
- Spare batteries
- Water
- Energy snacks
- Trekking poles
You will have an early dinner and go to bed early, usually around the evening, because the summit attempt begins around midnight.
Overnight: Barafu Camp – approximately 4,673 m
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Summit Day
Distance: Approximately 14–17 km
Total hiking time: 12–15+ hours
Barafu: ~4,673 m
Uhuru Peak: 5,895 m
Mweka Camp: ~3,100 m
Overnight: Mweka Camp
This is the longest and most demanding day of the expedition.
Around midnight – Summit attempt
You wake around 11:00 p.m.–midnight, have a light breakfast or hot drink, put on your warm clothing and begin the summit ascent.
The first section is steep and slow.
You will hike through the darkness using headlamps, following the switchbacks toward the crater rim.
Your guide will maintain a very slow pace and organize regular breaks.
Stella Point – 5,756 m
After several hours of climbing, you reach Stella Point on the crater rim at approximately 5,756 m.
If weather conditions are favorable, this is often where trekkers experience sunrise.
From Stella Point, you continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak.
Uhuru Peak – 5,895 m
You finally reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the highest mountain summit in Africa.
6
Spend a limited amount of time at the summit for photographs and celebration, depending on weather, altitude and your physical condition.
Descent to Barafu
After the summit, begin the descent toward Barafu Camp.
The descent can be tiring because of the loose volcanic scree, so trekking poles are useful.
At Barafu, stop for refreshments and a short rest.
Continue to Mweka Camp
After resting at Barafu, continue descending toward Mweka Camp.
The landscape gradually changes from alpine desert to upper montane forest.
Arrive at Mweka Camp in the afternoon or evening.
Have dinner and enjoy a well-earned rest after the summit day.
Overnight: Mweka Camp – approximately 3,100 m
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Distance: Approximately 9–10 km
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Altitude: ~3,100 m → ~1,640 m
Habitat: Rainforest
Trek ends: Mweka Gate
After breakfast, begin your final descent through the rainforest.
The trail can be wet and muddy, particularly after rainfall, so take care on the descent.
As you lose elevation, the vegetation becomes increasingly dense.
After approximately 3–4 hours, you reach Mweka Gate.
At the gate, you complete the park exit procedures and receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate, where applicable.
Your vehicle will then meet you for the transfer back to Moshi.
Arrive at your hotel for a hot shower, lunch and relaxation.
